Artificial intelligence is changing our lives, but only a few big tech companies are calling the shots. In a recent TED AI Show episode, host Bilawal Sidhu talked with geopolitical expert Ian Bremmer, one of the report’s co-authors, about the UN’s new initiative, “Governing AI for Humanity.” They discussed how the United Nations aims to create global rules for AI to make sure it benefits everyone, not just the powerful few.

➡️ UN’S BOLD MOVE ON AI GOVERNANCE: The United Nations has released a plan to set up global guidelines for artificial intelligence, much like rules for nuclear power and aviation.

➡️ TECH GIANTS VS. WORLD GOVERNMENTS: Right now, a handful of tech companies control AI development, which raises concerns about fairness and the role of national governments in regulation.

➡️ PUSH FOR GLOBAL COOPERATION: Ian Bremmer suggests we need international agreement on AI’s benefits and risks, proposing a global panel similar to the one for climate change.

➡️ INCLUSION OF DEVELOPING COUNTRIES: The report stresses the need to include nations from the global South to prevent a bigger digital divide and ensure everyone has access to AI technology.

➡️ ADDRESSING AI’S POTENTIAL MISUSE: There are real worries about AI being used in warfare, spreading false information, or causing economic problems, highlighting the need for international rules to manage these risks.

Will global leaders unite to set effective AI rules, or will its future be controlled by a few, potentially widening global inequalities?
