As AI moves from experimentation to core business, leaders face the challenge of positioning AI to drive strategic value. Recent surveys show 82% of companies now include AI in business strategy — a sign of its growing importance. However, the big question remains: Where should AI reside in the company to maximize impact?

Insights from Heidrick Consulting’s Survey:

1️⃣ Strategic Integration: With AI increasingly aligned with productivity and cost-reduction goals, 31% of AI leaders now report directly to CEOs — up from 17% last year. This shift signals AI’s strategic value and elevates it within executive ranks.

2️⃣ Organizational Models: Companies adopt various AI structures, from embedding AI within business units to establishing centralized AI centers. Each model has unique strengths, and the choice depends on company size, complexity, and strategic goals.

3️⃣ Foundational Questions: Leaders succeed when they prioritize clear goals. Key questions focus on strategic outcomes, data ownership, and tech infrastructure. Setting a strong foundation transforms AI initiatives into actionable business value.

Takeaway: Structuring the AI function requires thoughtful alignment with strategic priorities. Leaders must start with the right questions to establish a model that supports their long-term AI goals.
